Original 1881/1914 Stage Revealed

The stage floor – which was built up decades ago to a higher level than the adjacent backstage areas – has been removed, revealing the original 1881/1914 stage beneath. The original lower level floor will be renovated and retained. This, in conjunction with new lift access, will provide level access to the stage and throughout the dressing rooms for the first time.
A change in orientation of the stage floor boards indicates the extent of the original 1881 stage and its 1914 extension, to the size we know today. Original skirting boards, previously hidden by the modern stage floor, have also been revealed. These will be restored and retained, along with the proscenium arch, apse and stage doorways.
